Why Cutting Calories to Lose Weight Could Backfire

Generally, people assume that if they cut calories, they can create a large enough calorie deficit and, as a result, lose weight. Yes, you are required to cut down your intake of heavy foods but if you cut too many calories from your diet, it can backfire. Here are a few reasons why cutting calories to lose weight could backfire:

When you cut down your food intake, you not only reduce the number of calories you consume but at the same time miss out on certain nutrients your body needs. As you would know, your body needs adequate nutrition for your systems to work properly. If you don’t get sufficient nutrition, your body won’t be able to burn fat. Hence, if you go too far when cutting calories to lose weight, you might not be able to meet your nutrient needs.

Naturally, when you cut down your food intake, you might feel hungrier than usual. Over time, your body gets used to the number of calories you consume. Reducing a few calories from your diet here and there shouldn’t make a substantial difference but cutting calories to lose weight can actually make you feel hungrier and, as a result, you might end up eating more than you intend to.

Calories are the foremost source of energy for your body. Reducing your caloric intake can cause you to feel lethargic and low on energy, as your body might not have necessary calories to produce the energy you need to not only get through the day, but to work out, which is the key to losing weight.

While you might be able to get through lack of energy, your cognitive function might decline as well. Your brain also needs fuel, which it gets through the food you consume. Now, if your brain doesn’t have sufficient fuel, you might be unable to focus properly, and this could lead to sugar cravings, as your brain needs calories to burn for energy. An alternative source of energy can be caffeine, which, again, consuming too much of will disrupt your weight loss efforts.
These are some of the reasons why cutting calories to lose weight can backfire. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t reduce your caloric intake at all, but cutting too many calories from your diet can cause more harm than good. A better option is to consume a healthy diet and back it up with regular exercise.
